Barium Carbonate

  • Barium Carbonate is the main source of barium oxide in glazes, where it functions as both a flux and assists in producing matte finishes. Because barium carbonate is both a flux and a matting agent, then, it achieves results that can be difficult to capture with other materials -- for example, there are many glazes that take advantage of barium carbonate's tendency to produce crystals within a matte matrix. Barium carbonate is also used to neutralize sulfates and cut down on surface scumming in claybodies.
